Thought for Food
April 26, 2007 on 10:22 am | In The Life of Paul |I have come to the sad realisation that my cooking skills are rather boring.
I’m coming up on three years of share house living, since moving out of my parents’ house where food happens by itself and dishes get cleaned up on their own. Since then, I’d have to say I’ve acquired what I’d call a reasonably decent basic repertoire of basic meals to cook. I can whack together a decent spaghetti bolognaise for a group of visiting friends (or failing that, a reasonable stir-fry in all its gluten-free splendour). I’d like to think that I keep myself reasonably well nourished.
I’m getting bored with it all though. I woke up this morning and the idea of a bowl of Nutri-grain with milk made my stomach pre-emptively unimpressed. I settled for some cruskits grilled with cheese on the top and a glass of OJ. There has got to be more to brekky than that! I’ve tried doing google searches to find some inspiration but all of the food that people blog about looks like it is incredibly overcomplicated.
So, I appeal to you, my loyal blog readers to inspire me. What’s your favourite recipe for dinner? What’s your favourite breakfast food? What are some good, reasonably healthy things that you can make at the start of the week in a batch and keep plugging away at, in true bachelor pad style?
Oh… and just to make it a challenge:

I am allergic to nuts, especially peanuts, which consequently excludes all forms of satay and curry. I don’t like chocolate. Peas suck. Tuna is yuck.

Correction: curry rarely involves the use of nuts, especially peanuts. You just don’t like it because the smell of it makes you think it contains nuts, and therefore you have a psychosomatic response to it which makes you feel sick.
Anyhow, this is one of my favourite recipes for quick and easy meals:
Savoury mince/beef: brown some mince or diced beef (if you use a pressure cooker or are able to cook it for several hours, you can use dodgy cheap steak, if not i’d go for more premium cuts) with some diced onion. Add any vegies you have lying around (carrots, celery and capsicum are great) and flavour with generous amounts of tomato sauce, soy sauce, worcestershire sauce and anything else you can grab. A bit of salt and pepper is generally a good idea. Serve with mashed potato ideally, but can also go with rice quite well.
My other favourite dish is Apricot Chicken. In a microwave safe container whack a packet of french onion soup, then plop in some diced chicken and stir to coat the pieces. Chuck in a can of apricot nectar (Ardmona is the best brand) and put it in the micro for 5 mins on high, then 10 mins on medium). Serve with rice. Very easy, and can be cooked from start to finish within 20 minutes.
Omelettes/quiches are seriously easy and quick, try some non-bolognese sauces such as napoli, mushroom, the salami one…always put a fair bit of chilli in i reckon…olives are good too.

I ruled out curry on the basis that every time I’ve tried to eat it, it makes my throat start to close over like peanut products do.
I’m sure that’s only a phychosomatic restriction of my airway Lance. Thanks for your expert medical opinion and for the recipes as well. I will give them a go.

I’m allergic to peanuts like Pauly-pops and seeing as we both have the same genes (I hate to admit) and I have no problems with eating curry I think Lance is right. You do have psycho reactions. To lots of things. Knives, scottish accents, being pinched on the bum.

The question you should be asking yourself Janelle, is what kind of person would have subjected me to those things in order to find out such horrific detail?
Answer: You.

Hate to say it Paul, But I agree with Lance completely. the satay smell reminds you of curry, which gives you the same reaction in your throat, cos you think it’s like the nut thing. Check out the ingredients of your average curry sometime - just a bunch of difference herbs and spices - no nuts. Also, not all satay has nuts either - so technically the allergy to “nuts” does not exclusively exclude all satay and curry. Have you made lasagne yet?
